Create Multi-Functional Rooms

multifunctional_room
Many of the home care and decorating magazines we pick up at grocery stores show great ways to decorate the spare room in our homes to be used as study, library, guest room in our home office or play room. Unfortunately, many of us live in similar home which does not allow for an extra room to be totally devoted to a single purpose. Do not despair! One solution is to create a home with spaces that serve double duty.

CREATING A GUESTROOM

One simple way to create a guest room in your home is to purchase a sleeper sofa or day bed that serves as seating during the day and a place for guests to sleep at night. A foam mattress is not  as comfortable as an inner-spring type, so don’t be afraid or embarrassed to actually lie down on the pulled out bed to make certain your guest will b e comfortable. Another alternative is to have built-in-banquettes in your dinning or living room. Make sure that these banquettes are long and wide  enough to accommodate your overnight guests, as well as comfortable enough to sit on it. The top of these banquettes can be filed up or removed to provide additional storage for guest lines. Also make certain that the upholstery on op of the banquettes is thick enough to provide a comfortable night’s sleep.

CREATING A HOME OFFICE

The trend that has more of us working at home presents the problem of designing a functional home office area that can be hidden or closed off when not in use. If you have a large closet that can be spared, it is the perfect space to create home office. during the day, doors can be left open with ample space for a desk, office equipment, storage and other items needed for your home office. When you are finished for the day, the doors can be closed to shut off your home office area, with no rearranging hassle. If you don’t have the closet available, a corner of the room can be used.

CREATING A STUDY/LIBRARY

A private nook where we can sit down and read, write letters or simply daydream is  a nice gateway in our homes from our hectic,pressure-filled lives. A pair of bookcase placed strategically in a corner of a dining room, kitchen, den , living room or a bed room with a comfortable easy chair and a good floor lamp or a side table and reading lamp  creates an instant library.

Whether you live in a  sprawling mansion, cozy cottage or space efficient studio apartments, a little creativity and some careful space planning can turn your single purpose spaces into multifunctional rooms.

Encourage Kids To Grow A Plant

childrent_and_plants
Today we are so busy with our lives and nobody have time to think about environmental issues. We can teach this to our kids and make our kids love plants. They can have affection with plants very quickly because of their tender age.

Does your child have a plant? Encourage your child to grow a plant on his very own, and help him increase his knowledge about plant life and about Mother Earth.

Even though you may have plants in your home, or in your garden, how many of them have been planted by your children? One? Five? Or none?

Few Must Try Experiments

Give your child a few small pots, or paper or plastic glasses (with a hole at the bottom, so excess water can drain out. This is very important, because if there is too much water, the roots of the plant are unable to draw in oxygen, and the plant effectively ‘drowns’.).

Fill up the pot or glass with soil. Either cut a portion from an existing plant and let your child plant it in his pot, or let him start from scratch, by planting seeds or beans.

If your child is planting mustard or radish seeds, he could first soak them in water for a few days, until they begin to sprout. Once they have sprouted, your child can plant them in soil.

He should add a little manure, to help fertilize the soil.

Encourage your child to find out as much as possible about his plant. Will it give flowers? What is the name of the plant? How does a plant soak up the water? What are roots? What is chlorophyll? Your child will remember these details far more vividly if he is growing the plant himself, instead of simply trying to learn the facts by reading a textbook.

Plants help prevent soil erosion

Explain to your child the importance of trees and plants. Trees and their roots keep soil firmly in place, and prevent it from getting washed away and eroded. If there were no trees, the soil would just keep tumbling down from hilltops! Your child can try to pull his plant out lightly, and he will notice that it is firmly attached to the soil.

Plants grow in the direction of the sun

Let your child plant seeds in 3 plastic glasses. Let him keep 2 glasses upright, while he turns the third glass on its side. He will notice that all plants will grow roots towards the earth, and leaves towards the sun. After a few months, once the plant has started growing, he should place the third glass upright. The leaves, which now appear sideways, will slowly start reaching upwards, in the direction of the sun.

Advantages of ‘Project Plant’

Growing a plant is a great practical exercise for your child. Not only will he enjoy doing it, but he will also get great satisfaction from the fact that he has just brought forth a life.

Once the plant starts growing, and sprouting flowers, your child’s joy will know no bounds. It will also give him confidence that he has succeeded in a particular task.

Your child will learn the functions of the soil, the manure and the plant seeds. He will learn that a plant requires sunlight and water to grow.

You could help conserve rare plants by replanting their seeds, and increasing their population.

Gardening also makes for an extremely satisfying hobby, and is something that your child can continue doing even when he is much, much older.

Experiments such as this will also teach your child patience, as your child will have to wait a while before his hard work bears fruit. A child with patience will have fixed goals in life, and will be willing to work dedicatedly and perseverance, towards his goal. An impatient child will allow himself to get frustrated if he doesn’t achieve immediate results. Working with plants allows a child to get used to the idea that he has to sow the seeds early on, in order to reap the benefits in the future.

Household Remedies Of Pest Control

homemade_pest_control
Insects are a major concern in every house and there are times when you need to call professionals but that isn’t a cheap solution. Chemicals used by the experts are too strong and don’t leave their impact very soon keeping the house of kitchen unsafe for sometime. Small children or elder people are quite allergic to the chemicals used by the professionals (Pest Control professionals).  Why not use some homemade tips which can solve the problem of bugs at your home, keeping it safe for children and elderly people.  Here are some safe methods you can try the next time you need to rid your home of bugs, insects.

The power of soap

This is an excellent way to deal with insects that are slow fliers like box bugs. This method is also cheap and efficient. All you have to do is prepare a soap solution by mixing a couple of teaspoons of dishwashing soap in a litre of water. You can then fill it in an empty spray bottle and use it to spray the soapy solution over the bugs. This does not kill them instantly. It works by suffocating them, so that they stop moving a few minutes after they have been sprayed.

You can also use this method to get rid of crawling insects. You can keep ants away just by wiping down your kitchen counters with soap and water to discourage them from paying a visit. But get rid of the crumbs first. The best part about this method is that when you are done, there are no toxic chemicals to worry about. Also, your house will not smell of insect repellent.

There is a slightly different method to deal with slugs in your garden. For these creatures, fill a bowl with a mixture of soap solution and stale beer, and keep the bowl in those areas where they are most active. The slugs are attracted to the bowl by the scent of the beer. Once they crawl in, they are trapped and die by drowning. You can even substitute the beer with grape juice or honey.

Lure them in

In the case of nesting insects like ants, cockroaches, and bees, merely killing the ones you see is not going to solve the problem. That is because you will only be targetting the individuals that you see and not the entire colony. The key to dealing with these insects is to bait them and get them to take the bait back to the nest.

A good bait to use is some borax in a solution of sweetened warm water. The sugary scent attracts the insects while the borax kills them. Since it is slow acting, it allows them to take the borax back to their hive before they die and, thus, poison their nest mates. Keep the bait solution in a small container in the open. It will do its job of attracting the insects and, at the same time, will keep the surrounding areas borax-free.

Know your enemy

All insects are not bad. In fact, many insects are natural predators of pests. So they can actually help you in your fight against those which are harmful. Before you attack something, make sure you are not destroying a friend.

– Bees are excellent pollinators in the garden. They are responsible for the transfer of pollen from one plant to another when they go to different flowers to collect nectar. You only have to worry about them if they build a hive in or around your house.
- The humble ladybug or ladybird beetle is a known predator of aphids, which are a very common plant pest. Some species of ladybugs also feed on scale insects and mites. Ladybug larvae are also very efficient in controlling pests. They have a ferocious appearance, which misleads people into thinking they are harmful, which is untrue.
- The praying mantis lies in wait while perched on plants and catches unsuspecting insects with the help of its modified front legs.
- Spiders are also excellent predators of insects, especially in the garden. Some species of spiders are poisonous and can deliver a nasty bite if provoked. But a vast majority of them are harmless to human beings.
- Dragonflies, just like birds and bats, feed on mosquitoes and are useful to have in your outside environment.

Keep them away when you can

Prevention is certainly better than cure. Instead of waiting for an army of pests to take over your home and then trying to get rid of them, you can follow a few basic rules to prevent pests from entering your home.

– Clean surroundings are the first step to securing your home. Removing spilled food and crumbs immediately goes a long way towards keeping ants and cockroaches away from your home by depriving them of a food source.
- Keep garbage in cans with tight lids and clean the cans regularly. This will eliminate a potential breeding site for disease carrying insects such as house flies.
- Mosquitoes breed in pools of stagnant water. You can avoid this by not storing water for long periods of time.
- If you have plants indoors, check the pots regularly to see that there are no pools of water accumulating in or near them.

How do you keep you home pest free? Share your tips with all of us. I would love you to leave me a comment and let me hear your opinion. If you’ve got any thoughts, comments or suggestions for things we could add, leave a comment.

Create Magic In Your Dinning Area

dinning_room
One of the most important places in the home is, needless to say the dinning room. It’s here that here you sit for your meals and engage in family conversations and this also the place where guests converge for meals.

It’s therefore essential to create the ideal decor that puts you at ease and the place de resistance – the dinning table – should be practically designed to give an air comfort here. For those looking to give their dinning room a new look, we’d suggest that while the classic wood is an all time favorite, metal, glass and onyx and trendy too. The table top can also be of veneer, mop, leather, stone, silver leafing etc….Expert say that one should keep the scale of the table to the size of the room. The most practical is a round table because it can accommodate more people. A square table can be placed in a larger rectangular space, nut sizing needs to be planned with the seating. Slim tables best fit in quiet, minimalistic, zen- like interiors. As for the chairs, try and make sure they complement your table. The ones in vogue are seats upholstered in faux leather, leather suede or fabric. The colors of the cushion must complement the walls of the room. While a bright colored seat makes the space livelier, neutral colors give the place a cosy look.

These days different detailing in wood with Italian marble which has precious stone inlay work. On the sides, mirror edged bevelled look is suggested. And for the chairs a very basic khadhi fabric that gives the place a different look.

To add magical touch to the room, decorate the table with flowers. Breakable stuffs should be avoided on it. Also, a paneled or textured wall can be backdrop to the table making it stand out bettter. Accenting wall with a golden hue could be a good option. One can also go in a wooden florring if your table has a glass top. Also, marble mosaic design on the floor should only be used if yur home boast of a large dinning area. Light must be given special attention. Celling pendant lights can be circular, rectangular ao square depending on the table shape. These lights make you feel relaxed and cosy while having dinner.

Eat Fresh – Develop Kitchen Garden

kitchen-garden_home
Nowadays it is been commonly seen that everything vegetable and fruits in market available is loaded with artificial color and made ripe through chemicals, thus reducing there nutrition intake and making them a hazard to our health.

If you have adequate space, with a little bit of effort you can get fresh organic food straight from your very own kitchen garden and get fresh vegetables.

But however, if space is a constraint many herbs and vegetables can even flourish in pots, growing bags and window baskets.

- Find place for your Kitchen garden
For a family of 6 a 200 square meter plot can take care of the food stock. There should be good sunlight available everyday for at least 4 hours. Tomatoes, cucumbers and other fruiting vegetables cannot grow without substantial sunlight. While sunlight is good for root vegetables like beets and carrots, leafy vegetables need more shade.

- Soil Preparation
Spring is the right time for maximizing the growth factors of soil. You can have a raised bed near your house that will get its required dose of shade from the roof. Soil can be improved by adding some red earth. Your plot will be ready for sowing after it has been tilled.

- Keep a check on seeds before sowing
While buying seeds check their sowing season, sowing and spacing technique. For leafy vegetables you can sprinkle the seeds and cover them with more soil. For others you might need furrow planting while some can be transplanted.

- Adequate Supply of Water and Fertilizers
By adding organic fertilizers or manures you improve absorption, biochemical stimulation and growth in plants. Manures also add nutrients to the soil. Another crucial factor for plant growth is water. However, you cannot water the kitchen garden the way you water your flower pots. These plots need abundant supply of water. Your vegetable garden needs regular irrigation for 10 days after sowing. You can then bring it down to twice or thrice every week. The soil should never be totally dry, it needs constant moisture.

- Prevent your garden from diseases, weeds and pests
Your lovely little kitchen gardening would need vigilant weeding. Pests and insects can be kept away by natural methods like companion gardening. For example, grow basil and tomatoes close by. Basil attracts bugs that eat the pests which bother tomatoes. Sadly, in some urgent cases a pesticide can be the only way to save your plants. In such cases go for microbial pesticides, botanical pesticides and pesticides manufactured from petrochemicals. Botanical pesticides, for example, quickly break down after exposure to heat or water causing far less damage than synthetic pesticides.

- Harvesting
This is the moment every kitchen gardener waits for. Harvesting is your time to pluck the fruits of your labor. Remove the ripe vegetables as soon as they mature to avoid rotting. Your kitchen garden will thrive with your seeds of effort and patience. After a couple of months, all you need to do is walk down to your own vegetable market to get a bag full of healthy foods.

You can make your own perfume using the flowers from your garden. Most of the perfumes you see named after icons, celebrities; brands are either synthetic based or petroleum-based.

Perfume making is a big industry today and the role of perfumers has gained popularity and is of great important in places like Paris. If you wish to make your own scent (perfume), guess what, making a ladies perfume is not that difficult and can be a natural product so you don’t have to worry about getting a rash.

Begin by plucking your favorite flower or multiple of them from your garden and detach the petals and put aside.
When making a perfume using flowers, choose a strong scented flower or if you choose to wear subtle fragrances those are also fine.
Wash them under clear tap water to make sure they are pesticide and dirt free.
Pour distilled water in a boiling pan or distill the water by boiling it and collecting the steam.
Put the petals in the water and let it shimmer for a couple of hours without burning.
Turn off the heat after those couple of hours and let the contents of the container cool.
Store using a glass bottle with a cork to avoid evaporation.

You can also use a slightly different method as well -

While placing the flower petals in the container, use a cheese cloth on the bottom of it with ends hanging out.
Place the petals above and pour water
Let it sit like that for the night and in the morning squeeze the water from the cloth.
Let the liquid simmer for a while till only a teaspoon is left.
Turn off the heat and bottle the liquid.
Voila! You have your own scent.

If you prefer scented oils, you can make oil based perfume at home. Just use the following method -

Choose the fragrances you like and mix them together. If you choose to wear only one perfume, use plenty of drops of that single one or choose to experiment using that 2 to 3 different variants with few drops of each.
Mix them together and bottle it up. Shelf life for oil based perfumes is much more and with Vitamin E added, they can last a long time.
Further change your homemade perfume after it has cooled especiallly if it is too strong or too subtle.

How To Make Your Kitchen A Safe Place For Kids

Children love to roam throughout the house and especially intrude into the areas where they are not supposed to. Kitchen is one such part of the house. Especially if the age group is toddlers or those upto 12 years old, they are prone to several accidents in the kitchen.

When you design your kitchen and when you set up the things in it, your child is the person whom you should think of first. This will prevent running after him or her or constantly putting things away from the reach.

In United States alone there were more than 50 thousand kitchen accidents happened, most of them involved with kids and negligence on the part of parents. It is vital to make sure that your kitchen is kids-safe because not only your kids but the friends of your kids may come to your kitchen. You don’t want to keep running behind every kid.

Following are the points you need to take into account:

If you have a toddler at home, place a child-safety gate at the kitchen entrance. Toddlers have a habit of pulling things or playing with objects. This could be risky.

When designing the kitchen interior, keep certain things in mind. Make latches or locks for lower cabinets. Always keep certain cabinets at higher levels where they can be accessed by elders. You can keep sharper things at such places.

Also have the switchboards at heights and make sure to unplug all the appliances when not in use.

Avoid using table cloths or mats on the kitchen table as kids can pull them easily.

Have a safe place to keep the oven or stove where your child cannot reach and also make sure there is no stool or chair nearby!

Have a broad kitchen platform and keep the hot stuff at the back-end. Even if the kitchen platform is broad, do not place the child on it even casually!

These all are very basic safety tips which should be taken care of. I would love to hear your thoughts and experiences of making your kitchen a safe place your young kids. Please leave me a comment and let me know.
